GMR Year-In-Review: January/February 2025

Selecting the right blasting partner is a critical success factor for any large-scale mining operation. From safety and operational efficiency to cost control and productivity, blasting expertise has a direct impact on a project’s long-term performance. Advanced blasting technologies can also enhance fragmentation, improve downstream processing, and maximise overall profitability.

One company with a proven global track record in this area is Austin Powder. In the January/February 2025 issue of Global Mining Review, Abraham Lindo of Austin Powder Panama shares key technical learnings and operational insights from a major copper mining project in Latin America.

Project Overview: Supporting One of Latin America’s Largest Copper Mines

GMR Year-In-Review: Jan/Feb 2025

Since early 2019, Austin Powder has played a central role in the development of one of the region’s largest open-pit copper mining operations. The company was awarded a long-term contract to provide explosives technology and comprehensive blasting services, supporting the project from early construction phases through to full copper production.

Austin Powder’s scope of work covered the complete explosives value chain. This included sourcing and safely storing raw materials, operating on-site bulk emulsion manufacturing facilities, and delivering explosives to multiple blasting areas. At peak production, the operation required approximately 5,400 t of bulk emulsion per month to support blasting across two open-cast mining areas.

State-of-the-Art Bulk Emulsion Manufacturing and Delivery

Reliable, High-Performance Manufacturing

At the heart of the operation is a purpose-built emulsion manufacturing facility designed to meet the mine’s high production demands. Operating at an average output of 230 t per shift, the plant achieved 100% compliance with QA and QC standards, ensuring consistent product quality and stability while minimising unplanned downtime.

Austin Powder’s expertise in complex supply chain management also proved critical. Strategic planning and inventory control ensured uninterrupted availability of key raw materials, including high-density ammonium nitrate (HDAN), even under challenging logistics conditions.

Efficient and Flexible Explosives Delivery

Explosives delivery was supported by a fleet of six mobile production units (MPUs) capable of producing both straight bulk emulsion and a 70/30 blended product. Each MPU completed three to four delivery cycles per day, achieving an average pumping capacity of 200 t of gassed product daily.

This flexible delivery model enabled consistent blasting performance while adapting to changing operational requirements across the mine.

A Strategic Partner for Long-Term Mining Success

The project demonstrates how selecting an experienced and technically capable blasting partner can deliver measurable benefits across safety, productivity, and cost efficiency. For large-scale copper mining operations, partnering with a company like Austin Powder is not just a logistical decision—it is a strategic investment in sustainable, long-term success.
