Codelco and Hexagon Partner to Develop Advanced Digital Mining Technologies
Codelco and Hexagon have taken a significant step toward shaping the future of mining by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at developing and implementing advanced technological solutions across Codelco’s operations. The agreement establishes a long-term strategic partnership focused on innovation, safety, digital transformation, and sustainable mining practices, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to responsible resource development.
Under the MoU, Codelco and Hexagon will explore, develop, validate, and deploy cutting-edge technologies addressing operational challenges in modern mining. It creates a framework for future contracts and projects that prioritize worker safety, increased automation, deeper digitalisation of production processes, and enhanced environmental monitoring. These initiatives support Codelco’s vision for safer, more efficient, and more sustainable operations in Chile and beyond.

A key aspect of the agreement is the ability to conduct pilot programs and field trials of technologies that are still under development or not yet commercially available. This approach enables Hexagon to test and refine its solutions in real-world mining conditions, adapting them to the specific needs of Codelco’s diverse operations. As a global leader in measurement technologies, Hexagon brings advanced operational technologies and data-driven insights that help mining companies optimise resources, improve decision-making, and move materials more safely.
The collaboration will focus on a wide range of advanced mining technologies. These include fatigue and distraction alert systems to reduce human error, collision avoidance and pedestrian protection solutions to enhance workplace safety, and sensors paired with visualisation platforms for real-time environmental monitoring. The partnership will also explore the use of artificial intelligence to enhance safety management and production processes, as well as autonomous mining solutions, truck fleet management systems, and advanced tools for assisted drilling. Additionally, geospatial analysis technologies will be utilized to assess environmental impacts and support responsible, data-driven decision-making.
According to Felipe Lagno, Corporate Manager of Innovation and Technology at Codelco, the alliance is a key part of the company’s broader digitalisation strategy. He noted that the partnership supports Codelco’s goal of advancing toward safer, more efficient, and more sustainable mining while strengthening collaboration with world-class technology partners. By working together, both companies aim to help build the “mining of the future” and reinforce Codelco’s role as a pillar of sustainable development for Chile and the global mining industry.
Hexagon’s Mining President, Dave Goddard, highlighted the importance of safety, operational excellence, and environmental stewardship within the partnership. He stated that the MoU formalises a strong existing relationship and creates a foundation for both companies to work closely in testing and refining technologies under real operating conditions. This collaborative approach ensures that new solutions deliver measurable value not only to mining operations but also to surrounding communities, demonstrating how digital innovation can positively transform the mining sector.
The MoU will run for five years, guided by mutually agreed principles such as confidentiality and responsible use of information. With this agreement, Codelco and Hexagon set a new benchmark for mining innovation, safety, efficiency, and sustainability worldwide.
